Cricket Australia slams banner trio

Cricket Australia has issued a “first and final warning” to three people kicked out of Optus Stadium last night for unfurling a banner that read ‘It’s OK to be white’.

Social media has been divided with reactions to the banner, with police officers and security ejecting the men from the ground.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said the three would be issued with a “first and final warning” over the incident.

“Cricket Australia takes a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour at any of our matches, which includes racial vilification,” they said.

“Our message to any fan attending a match is that if you display anti-social behaviour you will be removed and risk being banned from any cricket match across Australia, along with police action.”

The spokesperson urged anyone who witnessed anti-social behaviour to report the matter to security or staff “immediately”.

Reactions to the incident on social media have been largely divided, with some slamming the trio — while others questioned what they had done wrong.

The phrase gained notoriety in Australia at the end of 2018 when Pauline Hanson was almost able to pass a motion in the Federal Senate saying it was ‘OK to be white’.

The motion was defeated 31-28 despite the support of Government senators.

At the time, crossbench Senator Derryn Hinch decried the attempt.

“This sort of racism is not only wrong, it could be dangerous,” he said.

Government members reversed their approval of the motion the next day, saying they voted for it because of an “administrative error”.

Live updates: The Black Clash – cricket v rugby

All the action from the cricket vs rugby Black Clash at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The Black Clash cricket match will honour two sporting greats with the winning team to be awarded the Lomu-Crowe trophy at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval.

Martin Crowe passed away in March 2016 following a battle with cancer. He is considered New Zealand’s greatest test batsman and is one of only three New Zealanders in the ICC Hall of Fame. All Blacks great Jonah Lomu, a member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame, died in 2015 of a heart attack.

Crowe was a promising schoolboy rugby player featuring on the wing for Auckland Grammar School in a side that feature All Blacks first five-eighth Grant Fox.

The trophy is created by renowned New Zealand artist Shane ‘Spud’ Dudley with the blessing of the families of Lomu and Crowe.

Constructed from cement overlay to create a Greenstone finish blade, with steel and copper wire binding, the trophy is based on an adze – a prized Maori possession and tool that today symbolises strength and mana.

The event is the creation of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and Duco Events boss David Higgins.

“It’s truly fitting that the names of these two national heroes have pride of place on what is a wonderful, iconic piece of Kiwi art,” says David Higgins of Duco Events.

“I’ve always believed that Martin and Jonah have not been fully recognised for the contribution they made to the country through their tremendous deeds on and off the sports field.

“Both Martin and Jonah were men whose achievements transcended the sports field.

“So to be able to honour them even in a small way by naming the T20 Black Clash trophy the Lomu-Crowe trophy just feels right.

“To me it is fitting that Jonah and Martin be linked in some way to an event that features so many of New Zealand’s biggest sports stars. So we commissioned Shane Dudley to make a trophy that would be both unmistakably Kiwi and suitably honour the legacy of both Martin and Jonah.”

The exhibition idea is to pit rugby players who might otherwise have been professional cricketers, against some of the best former New Zealand representatives.

The match will replicate South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup where the Springboks play the Proteas.

The Team Rugby side will feature current All Blacks captain Kieran Read, former captain Richie McCaw and renowned cricketing talents Beauden and Jordie Barrett and Israel Dagg. Black Ferns star Kendra Cocksedge will also play for Team Rugby.

Team Cricket will including Fleming, former Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum along with Grant Elliott, Chris Harris, Nathan Astle and James Franklin.

WIPA launches cricket programme in high schools

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) yesterday announced its expansion of the WIPA in the Community (WIC) cricket programme which aims to aid the development of the sport at the high school level.

The initiative, which officially began in Jamaica on January 14, involves WIPA assigning and paying certified cricket coaches to provide technical support and monitoring of the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 programmes in a number of schools.

The initial roll-out of the programme will cover 20 schools in Kingston, St Andrewand St Catherine. However, WIPA President and CEO Wavell Hinds said the broader objective is to increase the number of coaches and spread the coverage across the island as the programme gains traction.

According to WIPA, the coaches in the programme are certified at either Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 by Cricket West Indies (CWI), or possess coaching certification from Cricket Australia.

Indian cricket lift bans on Pandya, Rahul

Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, who were suspended earlier this month for making controversial comments about women, have had their bans lifted with immediate effect.

Allrounder Pandya and batsman Rahul were sent home from India’s tour of Australia two weeks ago and subsequently banned after making remarks that were widely condemned as sexist and inappropriate in a TV show interview.

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) said a Committee of Administrators (CoA) lifted the ban on the players pending the appointment of the board’s ombudsman, making the duo available for selection to the national team in the interim.

Local media reported Pandya was likely to join up with India’s squad for the ongoing limited-overs series in New Zealand.

The two cricketers had been in limbo since their suspension on January 11 due to a split in the two-member CoA over the next course of action, according to local media reports.

CoA chairman Vinod Rai was in favour handing them a two-match suspension and allowing them to return to action pending an inquiry by an ad-hoc ombudsman, the reports said.

Diana Edulji, the CoA’s second member, wanted an inquiry into the matter carried out either by the BCCI’s office bearers and the CoA itself or by an ombudsman.

The BCCI, however, has been without an ombudsman since 2016, and the CoA last week approached India’s Supreme Court asking it to appoint one to investigate the case.

The involvement of the court stems from a 2017 decision to fire officials of BCCI for failing to reform one of the game’s richest bodies after a spate of corruption scandals and to set up the CoA that reports to it.

England 77 all out, West Indies bat again – listen to The Cricket Social

There will be calls to drop several players but this is probably England’s best batting line-up. You might quibble about some in county cricket that deserve a call up but there is no world beater out there.

The problem is this England side are just not improving. It’s the same mistakes – Keaton Jennings’ poor footwork, Joe Root out lbw to an inswinger, Jonny Bairstow getting bowled.

They are so vulnerable any time they come up against a bowling attack with anything about them, just as when they were routed for 58 by New Zealand’s superb duo Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

And this West Indies attack have superb qualities – Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel both average under 24 at home, Jason Holder is a very smart, skilled bowler and Alzarri Joseph is a gifted prospect. They were brilliant, England were abject.

Pakistan Cricket Board expresses regrets over Sarfraz Ahmed’s alleged racist remarks

By PTI

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed regret over the alleged racist remarks made by national team captain Sarfraz Ahmed against South African pacer Andile Phehlukwayo during the second ODI in Durban.

Sarfraz was caught on the stump microphone making an alleged racist remark towards Phehlukwayo in the 37th over of South Africa’s run chase on Tuesday. The hosts eventually won the match by five wickets.

“The PCB expresses regret over the remark made by their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and picked up by the stump mic during the second ODI against South Africa in Durban,” PCB said in a statement.

“The PCB neither endorses nor supports any comments that have the potential to cause offence, and firmly reiterates their zero-tolerance approach towards racist comments made; in whatever context.”

Sarfraz was caught on the stump mic, passing comments in Urdu.

“Abey kaale, teri ammi aaj kahaan baitheen hain? Kya parwa ke aaye hai aaj (Hey black guy, where’s your mother sitting today? What have you got her to say for you today)?” Sarfraz was quoted as saying by ‘ESPNcricinfo’ website.

The PCB also said that such incidents underline the role of educational training and it will work towards providing it.

“This incident has also highlighted the importance and significance of player education and training at all levels. The PCB endeavours to improve their player education programmes to ensure these types of incidents do not happen again.

“Sarfaraz is one of the most respected cricketers in the world. However, captaining Pakistan is a massive honour and any hurtful remarks by any cricketer, let alone the captain, are not acceptable to the PCB,” it added.

Sarfraz also took to social media to apologise for his actions.

“I wish to extend my sincere apologies to any person who may have taken offence from my expression of frustration which was unfortunately caught by the stump mic during yesterday’s game against SA,” he tweeted.

“My words were not directed towards anyone in particular and I certainly had no intention of upsetting anyone. I did not even mean for my words to be heard, understood or communicated to the opposing team or the cricket fans.”

Sarfraz’s comments have garnered a lot of flak including from former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar.

T20 cricket tickets, champagne and cheese boards among gifts to finance watchdogs

T20 cricket tickets, Warriors tickets, champagne, and cheese boards were among gifts and hospitality given to staff at New Zealand’s financial regulators by big corporates last year.

Corporate gifts have come under the spotlight in Australia this week after the Sydney Morning Herald revealed officials at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumers Affairs Commission have accepted gifts, ranging from meals at top restaurants to sports tickets, from corporations like Macquarie Bank and the power company Energy Australia that they are supposed to keep an eye on.

The revelations have sparked questions over whether regulators are too cosy with the companies they are meant to be policing and come a week ahead of the final report is due out on the Royal Commission’s investigation into misconduct in the financial services sector.

Queries by the Herald to New Zealand’s finance regulators show there are variations in how they treat declaring gifts and, despite potential for conflicts of interest, staff are still allowed to accept some freebies.

The Commerce Commission has the tightest rein on gifts and hospitality with it having to report anything valued over $30 on a register, while Financial Markets Authority staff have to report anything over $50.

The Reserve Bank has the highest cap with staff having to surrender gifts valued over $100 or reporting those they accept.

Reserve Bank officials are allowed to keep gifts of a lesser value except where they may be perceived as a conflict of interest.

Those accepted included a ticket and drinks paid for the World of Wearable Arts Festival by the Bank of New Zealand in 2017, corporate box tickets to the T20 cricket in February 2018 – paid for by Buddle Findlay and a golf tournament invite by Aon.

The Reserve Bank is in charge of regulating both banks and insurers which include BNZ and Aon.

The most number of items given by a corporate to the Reserve Bank came from the Industrial and commercial Bank of China (ICBC) which gave cheese boards, a mobile power pack, notepads and other technology and a brocade silk weaving.

Big law and accounting firms were among those who gave gifts or hospitality to Commerce Commission staff.

Minter Ellison gave bottles of champagne to ComCom staff in August 2017 with an estimated value of $60 a bottle.

While KPMG provided lunch, and Russell McVeagh gave chocolates.

Westpac was the only bank to give a gift to the Commerce Commission, giving a book of unknown value to a general manager.

Staff at the Financial Markets Authority are prevented from accepting any cash under its policy and must consider whether any other gifts will “be seen to compromise their
integrity or the integrity of the FMA” .

“If an employee considers that this would be the perception then, if practicable, the employee must decline the gift before it is accepted. If in doubt the employee must decline, or where practicable discuss with the relevant manager before accepting the gift.”

Gifts over $50 in value must be declared on its register but the register does not include information on the giver.

But an FMA spokesman gave some details of big ticket items including tickets to Warriors games supplied by Air New Zealand, an Expedia travel voucher worth $2000 which was won by a staff member at the Christmas party and supplied by the FMA’s travel firm.

Black Caps v India ODI: New Zealand’s loss highlights improvements needed ahead of Bay Oval cricket match

The Black Caps may be heading into tomorrow’s second clash against India with a “disappointing” loss but Kiwi bowler Lockie Ferguson is confident they can come back from it.

New Zealand opened the five-match Netmeds Series Trophy series poorly, going down to the visitors in the day-night match in Napier on Wednesday.

The hosts were rolled for just 157 at McLean Park, batting for just 38 overs as opening seamer Mohammed Shami put them under pressure in India’s eight-wicket victory.

Ferguson admitted Wednesday night was not New Zealand’s best performance, with putting runs on the board a major challenge of the match, but says they will look forward rather than dwell on what had already happened.

“We’ll be the first one to say it didn’t quite go our way but that happens in cricket sometimes, you know, and especially when you play a team like India,” Ferguson said.

“We’ll definitely park it, go game two and we’ll be better for it and I’m sure we’ll come out firing”

“The boys have looked at what went wrong and we’ll definitely park it, and look to continue our good form into Tauranga, where we’ve been very strong.”

Games two and three will be played at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval tomorrow and Monday and are expected to be last for Indian captain Virat Kohli, who scored 45 in Wednesday night’s win, set to be rested from the final two games of the ODI series in Hamilton and Wellington, as well as the three-match Twenty20 series. Rohit Sharma will step in as captain.

Ferguson said he would have enjoyed playing the world’s best batsman as much as possible during the series but understands the reasoning, when someone plays three formats of the sport.

Looking ahead to the Mount clash, Ferguson said they had “enough positives to take it to them in game two”, with a focus on retaining their aggressive mindset in their bowling attack and not forgetting their own strengths.

“We’ve still got to take wickets early on and look to be aggressive throughout and create pressure, you know I think we took a lot of positives out of that … there were still areas that we need to make improvements and I think going into next game we’ll be better for it.

“We enjoy being the underdogs in a way but we always have the belief that we can put on a performance and get the wins and create pressure from the bat and the ball.”

As the Black Caps try to bounce back from defeat Kane Williamson has called for a smarter batting approach and praised the Indian bowling attack for a performance that gave the Kiwi batsmen plenty of lessons to take away.

“I think they did perhaps expose us in some areas – I think the length they bowled was outstanding, it did make scoring hard to achieve.

Smart was a word that Williamson had on the mind post-match, arguing that there were no technical issues that needed to be solved, and better batsmanship all that was required for an improved effort in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

“The cricket smarts is something I think we want to be just a little bit better at – it’s something we do pride ourselves on but it just wasn’t there.

“It’s probably [about] awareness, and just making an adjustment to the opposition.”

That opposition happens to be one of the best sides in the world, and the Black Caps will need to be near their best to get back on level terms.

ECB looking for PR agency to promote new cricket format

The England and Wales Cricket Board is on the hunt for ad and PR agencies as it prepares to launch a new format of the sport.

The body, which governs the England cricket team, has contacted prospective agencies with a request for proposals.

It does not use an ad agency at present and the process is being run through AAR. It is also looking for a PR agency, or potentially a single shop that could do both advertising and public relations.

The review comes a week after the ECB announced that it had recruited Tony Singh as its chief commercial officer. The appointment allows current commercial chief Sanjay Patel to focus on launching a new cricket format called Hundred.

Hundred features 10-ball overs in a fast-paced format that will cut down the amount of time it takes for bowlers to change ends. Cricket typically involves six-ball overs.

Singh, who is currently content and business development director at BT, is joining the ECB in April, when Patel will then focus solely on his role as managing director of new competition. Patel will manage the ad review.

A version of this article first appeared on PRWeek sister title Campaign
